Fangs, Fur, and Feelings: Why I’m Lowkey Obsessed

Hi darlings, I hope your wine is ice-cold because it's about to get HOT...

So I just finished Swipe Right on Fate by Roxie Ray and you know when a book is not quite a five star, but you’re still lowkey hugging it to your chest like “no wait I actually love you”? That’s exactly where I’m at.

Also, full disclosure before I spiral, I have officially become a wolf shifter romance and fantasy romance girl. Like it’s a personality trait at this point. If there’s angst, identity drama, supernatural tension, and a little bit of “we are not like the others,” I’m already sold. So this book? This book walked in knowing it had me.

We’ve got a vampire who is just… not thriving in his vampire era. He’s awkward, lonely, trying so hard to be normal and failing in a way that is both endearing and a little bit heartbreaking. And then we have our girl, a werewolf who cannot shift. No wolf, no transformation, just vibes and a quiet, lingering feeling of not being enough in a world where she’s supposed to be powerful. Tell me why that hurt my feelings a little.

And somehow, these two absolute misfits end up on a human dating app. A HUMAN dating app. I’m sorry but that alone is already chaotic. The app matches them as “perfect,” which is honestly bold considering neither of them even feel like they belong in their own skin half the time.

Their whole dynamic is just… adorable chaos. The first date energy? Painfully awkward but in a way that makes you want to kick your feet. His whole “I am definitely a normal human man” act starts cracking almost immediately, and instead of it completely ruining things, it weirdly makes everything better because she sees through it. And she gets it. She’s also pretending, just in a different way.

And that’s kind of what makes this book so soft underneath all the humour. It’s not really about vampires and werewolves in the dramatic, high fantasy sense. It’s about two people who feel like they don’t fit anywhere finally finding someone who looks at them and goes, “no, I see you. You’re okay exactly like this.” And I ate that up. I really did.

BUT. And you knew there was a but.

This could have been a five star if it just gave me more to sink into (excuse the pun...). More depth, more time, more emotional intensity. The ideas are all there and they’re so good. The werewolf identity struggle alone? I wanted to sit in that a little longer, feel it a little deeper. Same with his whole outsider vampire situation. There are moments where it almost hits that deeper, slightly devastating emotional level and then it kind of pulls back and stays in that cozy, whimsical lane.

Which is cute! I love a cozy, whimsical paranormal rom com moment. But I also wanted just a tiny bit more bite, something I could really stick my teeth into and not let go of.

And I do think part of that is just that it felt a little too short. Like I blinked and I was already halfway through. I wanted more quiet scenes, more lingering conversations, more time watching them slowly figure each other out instead of getting there quite so quickly.

But also… the more I think about it, the more I’m like okay no, this is a 4 star for me. Because it did exactly what I needed it to do. It made me smile, it made me feel soft, and it gave me that very specific fantasy romance feeling of “maybe being different isn’t the worst thing if someone out there understands you.”

And if you’re in your wolf shifter era like I am right now? You’re going to eat this up. It’s messy, it’s cute, it’s a little bit chaotic, and the romance is genuinely sweet in that quiet, comforting way.

So yes, not a perfect five star. But a very lovable, very huggable 4 star that I will absolutely be recommending like “no seriously just trust me on this one.”

Now go read it so we can scream about it together!
